A  picture is worth a thousand words and more. However, the meaning can be seen correctly only against the right context. What is more, different contexts can mean different levels of information.
While a paradigm shift in the scientific context leads to changes in the way people see the world, in an existential context, the story is radically different: The life of the chick before hatching and after is not the same; yet, it is one and the same organism. 
Same goes for a foetus before birth and a newborn baby.
So this is something like humans also being a "metamorphic" species.

In both cases the new reality is the death of the entity that existed before it found itself metamorphosed and capable of peristing in its new universe.

Full and reliable meaning can be found only when a thing or situation is viewed in the right context. 

The picture above has to be understood in the context of the evolution of life on earth over four billion years. During most of that time, no visible life existed, only single celled microbial life populated our planet until about six hundred thousand years ago.

Then we, humans, had to wait for well over five hundred million years until the stage was ready for our appearance at around 3 million years ago.
During most of that time we lived like any other animal, with only simple tools helping us to be somewhat exempt from the absolute iron rules of nature.

However, knowledge without wisdom is a dangerous thing. And this picture warns about a futre that may come about if our behaviour on the planet continues much longer.
